This Is What You Do?

Mom: Xena, do you know anything about this? I leave you alone for two hours and this is what you do? I tried to be Kind by putting you in a nice big bathroom instead of in a kennel, and this is what you do?

How do you know I did that? Uh, Lucy might have gone in and chewed it after you let me out.

Maybe if you just left me free in the house with Lucy, things like that wouldn’t happen.

2 weeks later

Mom: Xena, you know I don’t leave you alone very often. I did what you asked and you were doing so well. Then, I leave you with Lucy and your sick Dad while I go to a class and this is what you do?

Uh, I was watching for you and, uh, oh boy, am I getting a time-out?

I am Xena the Schnauzer Princess Warrior in time-out

  1. Yes, I was a lot younger and I had just lost a baby myself so I felt it was healing to me. It did not occur to me that those kittens might be left homeless. But as I found homes for them in the newspaper a friend of my sisters took one home to his girlfriend and I specifically told him to call me and I would take him back. But girlfriend dumped the kitty when he wasn’t around. I never knew what happened to him. He was a tabby/ Siamese mix. So cute. Where the darker colors should have been there were stripes! Then another friend really loved the kitten she asked for but she moved into her grandparents home in Minnesota and I told her to leave him here. Her grandparents wouldn’t let him inside and he died during the winter. I was angry and heartbroken in both cases. People can be stupid but I’ve learned my lesson and I’m not going to let babies be born without knowing that people who really want them will be there for them.

I don’t care if they are human or cats or dogs or whatever. They all need loving and responsible homes.

  3. I never used to understand the importance of “no more unwanted puppies and kittens” either. We all grow and learn. Isn’t there a saying that the day we stop learning we are dead?

  4. I don’t think you are crazy at all. I had just never heard of this before. Patzy was in heat when she was caught as a stray. We were lucky she wasn’t pregnant. I guess shelters do the surgery right away because most peeps can’t or won’t keep the boys away from the girls and it creates too many more puppies and kittens than they can find homes for. So – kudos for you for being the respinsible pet parent and helping Xena get through those annoying heats. It must be a pain to put diapers or maxi pads on your puppy.

In my younger years, I let my cats have babies. First litter I kept them all. Then the next heat period I had 3 girls and two boys. Ended up with 13 kittens! Then the original momma cat was an experienced momma so her two daughters dumped their babes on grandma a lot of the time. (Sounds like some peeps nowadays doesn’t it?). Any way since thirteen kittens did not get enough attention from their own mommas and grandma didn’t have enough milk for that many, a few died. But I found homes for the rest of them. And my cats all got fixed. That will never happen again with me unless they showed up pregnant. Then I would take care of them and get them fixed and to good homes.

  5. She’s only doing it when left alone, so a wire kennel is our solution. If she starts eating our woodwork when we’re home, we’ll be sure to get some. (There’s always one in the crowd, right?)

  6. Oh Xena Pup. Wood does taste good so I understand. My Margret sprays something that tastes like green apples on the wood trim that we well ok I started chewing on. My sisters and I don’t even like the smell much less the taste. GShe got it at either Petsmart or Petco. That might help you to decide not to chew on the wood anymore. ~nose nudges Bessie Pup

  7. Hi Patzy. First, yes, she will be in a large wire kennel from now on when no one is home or she is alone with a sick person who can’t watch her.
Xena’s breeder told me about how the hormones during heat is essential to correct development. She’s a wonderful breeder with lots of champions in her lines, and believe me, she doesn’t want her clients breeding the pups, so that’s not why. I consulted my holistic vet about it, and she said that 3 cycles is best. She said it breaks her heart to see these pups spayed and neutered so young, but she understand why it needs to happen with them. Here is a good article I found that addresses early vs later spaying: https://www.whole-dog-journal.com/issues/16_2/features/spaying-or-neutering_20685-1.html (just copy and paste). Not surprisingly, the author leans toward holistic approaches and does raw feeding, the same as me. If you would like to converse with me more, just email me at the address on my side bar. Of course by now, you may have decided I’m crazy, LOL!

  8. I know dogs need to chew as it develops their jaw muscles and sets their teethies firmly in their mouths. I’m sure she has enough chew toys since you are good doggie parents so I guess she just needs more direction and put in a crate of some kind until she learns what is appropriate to chew on.

What I’ve never heard of, however, is to let the girls go through a couple of “heat” cycles before having her spayed. I know at the animal shelters they have puppies and kittens altered as soon as they are old enough and before their first cycle. Why does she have to wait for a couple of heats? It seems like the frustration of being in heat might make the urge to misbehave stronger in them and they might be more content to just have it done with?

I know I was happier after my hysterectomy! LOL. Not the same thing I know but I’m just curious.

  10. Have your parents determined your guilt through video recordings. If not then I blame a rabid squirrel that is hiding somewhere in your house and Lexi is protecting you from it.

  11. Jakey scratches the door frames when Mama and Daddy go out. They put me in my room(crate) while they go out…I have a feeling they may keep doing for awhile longer after seeing the fun you had, Xena ;-).

  12. No, I couldn’t guess what would (wood) be next. She’ll be staying in a large wire kennel on the rare occasions I have to leave her.

  14. When the peeps rescued Kyla (the Scottie) they wanted to see how she’d behave when they were out. They went next door for 15 minutes. When they returned, Kyla had taken the door stop which was screwed into the wood completely out!

  15. Thanks for the tips, Toni. We have a large wire pen that the hubby just has to get back from someone at work he loaned it to. (What on earth was he thinking?) She’ll have to start staying in it, as you said, until she is older and over this behavior.
P.S. Xena says she wishes you mind your own business.

  16. Oh My……..Xena has turned into a Termite. Might still be wild hormones…….Two things you can try Dogs hate the sharp smell of citrus, and this easy homemade solution to your problem could be sitting in your fruit bowl. A simple squirt of lemon, orange or lime juice can go a long way toward keeping your dog away from items you don’t want chewed. You can make a citrus spray by steeping 2 cups of citrus peels in 4 cups of boiled water until cool. Spray this anywhere you think your dog is or will be chewing.
The other thing is bitter apple spray.
She has to be stopped or contained in a pen where she can’t reach the trim.https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_3_7?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=puppy+playpen&sprefix=Puppy+P%2Caps%2C166&crid=QRFBTDPH3XAE
This is the white pen on sale for $27.29. Like I have in the diining room.
Sorry Xena but bad actions have to be stopped quickly. They are not cute!

  17. Oh dear! Two of my favorite woofies – Xena and Phenny – have been really naughty! Of course, their kitty boy buddy, Dougy, has destroyed a settee, an ottoman, and is working on a sofa.
