Friday Food for Thought:
Less than a week after a jury found Monsanto liable in a $289 million-dollar-cancer verdict, independent lab tests commissioned by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) report large doses of glyphosate in cereal for kids (and that us adults eat too), oat bars and other oat-based products.

To understand how long to keep dog off grass after weed killer has been sprayed, you must realize that the effects of the herbicide depend upon the concentration of the herbicide and the amount of your dog’s body in the solution. It is not uncommon for a moderately sensitive dog to react negatively to a herbicide, no matter what concentration is used.

I was not so thorough until last year when I discovered that certain food was making me literally sick.

I applaud you. We eat a lot of organic and are heading that way ourselves. It’s the only “safe” thing to do.

We only eat organic food and no processed food anymore so I know what’s in it. It’s horrible what big companies get away with.

Yes, economic pressure is the stone in the sling shot. 🙂

Getting the word out is the first step. Then, with economic pressure can we hope for a change.

Yes, and how do we stop a giant that powerful? Hmmm, David used a sling shot with a killing blow to Goliath’s forehead…

Agreed. And I believe that education will be our best weapon – but not by the big companies and those deep in their pockets.

It’s very sad that we, as a society, have stooped that low. It’s very sad that pure manipulation for profit, and to the detriment of our fellow humans, is accepted by so many of those who could do something about it if they so wished. My best and sincere wishes for change go out to the generations that follow me, for their future is otherwise highly questionable.

It’s not that the causes are unknown, Collin. It’s the deep pockets keeping the results quiet, or underplaying the facts, or causing the governing agencies to simply ignore it. The same goes on in the dog food industry. Did you know that seeds sold to farmers by Monsanto contain a gene that “turns them off” after they sprout so the farmers cannot use their own crop seeds the next planting season? Instead, they have to keep buying them.

Gah…spit…urp. Add another food to the only-buy-if-organic list. Thank you for sharing this info. Monsanto takes a perfectly good food and then destroys it because the gazillion dollars in profit apparently aren’t good enough. 🤬

Sadly, I agree with you. I find it disappointing that for all the fund raising that goes on for cancer treatment, it would seem that significantly less goes into the research into the cause(s) of the various cancers. Hopefully I am misinformed!

Yes, I have heard or read this same thing. And I totally agree…follow the money trail. Thank you for your comment.

According to the book Eat Wheat, Monsanto actually grows Roundup into the corn and oats, When the crop matures, the Roundup is activated and it causes a larger harvest. Monsanto is a HUGE contributor of campaign funds, so it is not likely that they will be stopped. Monsanto is working to keep us from being able to buy seeds to grow our own, Big Farm and Big Pharma are teaming up to make us sick so they can sell us more drugs,

Hey, we want pics when she starts glowing in the dark. Now non-GMO, organic donuts, that would work!

Well, yes, non-GMO and organic together, at least until an unknown “truth” comes out about those, too. 😦

Well it’s probably not that harmful really but then, the tobacco industry was saying much the same about cigarettes for the longest time; the alcohol industry sees no problems with their product; cannabis is becoming more widespread for many reasons but, of course, that won’t be a problem and … according to Donald Trump, climate change is a figment of our imaginations just as the news media are all fake … and we should not forget, the US military has been dumping nuclear waste in steel drums into the Atlantic ocean off the US East Coast since the 1950’s. Those drums must be pretty rusty by now, but what do we really have to worry about?

Yes. It seems I’ve eaten my share of weed killer over the years, as has my children.

And it’s usually a toddler’s first cereal. No wonder we are seeing more and more cancer in children.

We look for GMO-free or organic. Unfortunately it’s more expensive but so are doctors, hospitals and funerals.

And most folks blindly trust what is on the supermarket shelves. I no longer trust the governing bodies, either, as they turn blind eyes to the dangers. Makes me think their pockets are getting lined.

It seems that we, as a species, have a very uncertain future. Will it be greed/profit that eventually gets us or a super-ego driven by stupidity?

I only ate such processed cereals as a kid; as soon as I had adult choice, I gave them up. That was forty+ years ago. I take organic rolled oats as the only cereal from time to time and also seek organic flour/bread. Here in the UK, at least, organic practice eliminates spraying (see this article https://cereals.ahdb.org.uk/media/177057/is52-weed-control-in-conventional-and-organic-oats.pdf). The NFU also recommends for regular farming purposes that the lowest possible dose is applied and as late in the growing season as possible to minimise ‘plant uptake’. However, banning pesticides and herbicides would really be a better choice. This article is of interest to the serious reader; https://www.baumhedlundlaw.com/toxic-tort-law/monsanto-roundup-lawsuit/where-is-glyphosate-banned.
Trouble is, the big companies producing these chemicals are the agricultural equivalent of the drug companies in the health industry or oil producers in the power industry. They are leviathans unwilling to give up territory or riches.
