Grounded at Dog Park

Lucy: Xena, you are the only dog I know that can get grounded at the dog park. It was our third day in a row going there. You just don’t know when to shut your mouth. You were inciting riots with all your barking. And Mom said she was getting a headache. Xena: Please stop lecturing me. I paid the price. I had to sit with boring Mommy while you played with the other dogs. I wanted to run and play too. (and bark more)

  1. We only know cats now, but mommy had a big lab/Sheperd mix dog that got along with everyone at the dog park except the little dogs that were trying to prove they were tougher than any big dog and the little dogs would bark and growl trying to show they were tough when they weren’t. None of the big dogs barked or threatened like that!

Xena, you have to be mellow. Don’t worry about if another dog is bigger or smaller than you. Try to be friendly no matter what their size. Their size has nothing to do with how aggressive they are. In fact, little dogs are way more aggressive than big dogs. Try to become their friends!

  2. What an injustice! Everyone knows Xena just has to have fun, and, if that means barking, well, isn’t that part of what fun is all about!? (Of course, I got kitties when I retired because some people don’t like barky dogs in retirement communities. They were my first ever cats, and they know how to work me for treats and anything else they want.)

  3. Oh my, now you’ve done it. I think you’ve got a case of “I dare ya”. Used your high pitched screech to dare all the big dogs to try to take you on. They in turn would like to use you as a soccer ball and bounce your little hiney across the park. You were acting like a bully on the playground and that is NOT a good thing. Maybe you could try the little dog area once, but if you act out again that privilege should be taken away from you until a one word command can get you to control yourself. You can then stay home and think about Lucy and mom chilling out at the Dog Park without you..Maybe seeing the fly swatter again might bring back “no bark” into your memory. You know Xena you remind me of a 13 year old child that is back talking . Somehow they just wake up one morning and know everything and the moms have to go back to square one and start the training all over again Hope moms headache is better soon.

Well, I think for the purposes of ‘science’, Lucy can have her one-one time with mum first and then you get your go – or vicky verky… It just needs a little extra of mum’s time… but if I read correctly, NOW is exactly the opportunity! The outcome of your behaviour in the little dogs’ park will indicate whether this needs to be a more permanent arrangement. Little steps along the way… =mwah!= Yxx

Heck, Xena, surely there must be a compawmise? Howzabout you only bark when you arrive to let efurrybuddy know who you are and what your boundaries are, then let it rest until it is time to go out the gate again? (On the QT, I do wonder if it might be cuz you are having to hold your own among the big dogs… maybe mum could try out a visit to little dogs park a couple of times to see if it’s the same? Just for scientific anna-lie-sis, you understand?!) Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
