Lexi’s Memorial Service Announcement

This is a memorial service announcement. As most of you know, Lexi, our talented and precocious 13-year-old miniature schnauzer, returned to her Creator on September 4 after a three month bout with cancer. She was a much-loved Church Dog at St Luke United Methodist Church in Stuart Heights, after also “working” at St. Timothy’s and St. Paul’s Episcopal Churches and the Ochs Center for Metropolitan Studies. As such, Pastor Evelyn offered to hold a service to celebrate her life. All are invited to St. Luke this Saturday (September 24) at 10:30 a.m. The service will be streamed live and also – hopefully – recorded. It will either be streamed here or on http://www.stlukechatt.org.

Many locals know Lexi from her role as Toto in three productions of Wizard of Oz. She starred in her first performance in 2006 with Kim Jackson at the Theatre Centre, with a record attendance of 7,000 over 6 weeks and 26 performances. Her last turn on the boards was the fall of 2014 in the Jonathan Humble production at the Colonnade. For 10 years she brought joy to children as a therapy dog at TC Thompson. She epitomized what Mother Teresa said – ‘Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.’

I also want to say a special thank you to Samantha and Beth for coordinating the Treats for Lexi Tribute as well as all who joined in to make it a special day. Seeing all the wonderful posts made me cry and smile, and remember once again how much she was loved by everyone.

Several people have suggested I still post on Lexi’s blog. To that end, I will still post Memory Monday’s once or twice a month, as well as special posts when one of her friends or relatives – such as Piper, Ella, Riley, and Gracie – come to visit. Piper is with us now all the way from Louisville, KY, so there will definitely be some blogging going on soon.

Wishing you continued blessings from the furry (and feathered) ones in your lives.

Riley’s Treats for Lexi

This is Riley, Lexi’s brother. I am borrowing her blog today. I had to wait for the pizza to be delivered. It took all day. And Lexi, I managed to get more than pizza bones today. Thanks, Angel sis. I said a prayer for you, too.

This is the piece I want, Dad.

We love you and miss you, Angel Lexi.

Piper and Ella on Treats for Lexi

Hi, I’m Piper the schnauzer and I’m Ella the boxer Mix. We are Lexi’s cousins and we stole her blog. No we didn’t, Ella, Aunt Amy is letting us use Lexi’s blog to honor her on Treats for Lexi day.

Oh, OK. Can I have my treat first? Well, just this once, and I am going to be watching you only get one.

I would share this treat with you, Lexi.
I would share this treat with you, Lexi.

Now it is my turn.

I love you, Lexi, and I gobble this treat for you.

Memory Monday – Two Years Ago Today

Yep, as Lexi would have said, I’m at it again with those time-line thingies.

During September of 2014 Lexi was in rehearsal for her third run as Toto. We (Lexi and I) were working at the “church on the mountain,” as Lexi called it. From there, it was a mad 40 to 60 minute drive down the mountain, through downtown during rush hour traffic, and onto the interstate to get to the theater in North Georgia. Once we got parked, Lexi ran to the grass to relieve herself so that she didn’t have to take a break during rehearsal. Then up the ramp she ran and into the propped door, now focused and all business. This picture is of Lexi Toto hanging out with “The Piano Man” while listening to the director’s instructions to everyone.

Lexi Is at Peace with her Creator

After experiencing severe seizures every hour since 4:00 a.m., Lexi made the journey back to her Creator at 10:50 this morning. A prayer from our wonderful work supervisor and friend , Pastor Evelyn Harris of St. Luke United Methodist Church:

We commend, oh Lord, into your loving care your dear servant Lexi Sandy. Receive, oh Lord, your humble servant who has touched so many lives and reflected your great love for all of your creation. We thank you for her witness in this life and for her life to come, free of pain and diseases, in communion with you and all the saints. Amen

Lexi’s Dad prepared this video in her Memory and Honor (full screen is best viewing for this):

The date and time of Lexi’s memorial service at St.Luke, Chattanooga, TN,  will be posted when available.

I cannot begin to express my affection and appreciation to everyone in this blogging community who has laughed with us and prayed with us and cried with us.

I remain, Amy, Lexi’s faithful servant.

Visitors Just for Me

Everyone has been coming by to see me, at home and at work.

My cousin Piper and my Auntie Jen were here over the weekend. I was very glad to see them. They even slept in the bed with me and Mom. We had puppy piles.  During the evening, Piper was careful to not invade my personal space, while still keeping an eye on me.  Sort of.

0826161900
Piper! Wake up! You’re supposed to be visiting with me.

My peeps brother Andrew, and Jentry and The Boy came to the house and brought my brother Riley.  Everyone was so sweet and even Riley gave me a special nose touch goodbye when he left. Mom forgot to get pictures.

Now my friend Gracy has come to cheer me up, too. She is good at sharing.

It's OK, Mrs. Lexi's Mom. I told her she could.
It’s OK, Mrs. Lexi’s Mom. I told her she could.

Yesterday and today my friends at work visited. Ms. Beth brought me a Mickey D’s ice cream. I took two bites, and it was good, but that is all I wanted. My BFF Dave gave me his special Dave treats, and I took two from him this morning when he came in, and two more before he left. I just can’t say no to Dave. My Pastor Evelyn has been trying to feed me pancakes and sardines and other stuff I used to like, but none of it seems good anymore.

Tomorrow Mom plans to take me to see my other peeps brother, Adam. He will be happy to see me.

I’m not eating more than a couple of bites of food each day, and it is even getting hard to drink. I sleep most of the time, and no longer mind that Mom holds me and cuddles at night. In fact, it is strangely comforting. Mom finally stopped shoving pills down my throat. *whew*  And she stopped taking me to the vet’s, too. Mom said she is doing something called palliative care for me.

Mom’s brother-in-law sent her this article, “Will there be dogs in heaven?” Spoiler alert: The answer is No, but read the article to find a really happy ending.

Final Children’s Therapy Visit

This summer I finished up a ten year run as a therapy dog. I have done therapy in nursing homes and in a physical rehab center; however, my favorite has been at the children’s hospital – as long as the little munchkins stayed in their beds! The last Thursday of each month, Mom would say, “Lexi, do you want to go therapize the kids today?” I felt so good doing that work that I would grin the whole time I was there. So did the kids! See for yourself…

Noodle and Lexi Do Disney!

I want to share what my guy Noodle blogged about our date. He’s the best!

As most of you know, my Lexi isn’t doing well. (What’s going on with Lexi)

She has been asking to go on another vacation and I couldn’t deny her that. So, I rented a jet…

….flew to my girl, picked her up, and brought her to the happiest place on earth…DISNEY!

We made a mad dash for the tea cup ride at her request.

Let’s just say I was NOT prepared for all of the spinning. The things you do for love!

After the ride was done, I asked her if we could rest for a minute before continuing on. We found a nice spot in front of Cinderella’s castle.

(Notice my ears are inside out – that ride was intense!)

When I could feel my legs again, we were off to go see the lovers we remind Mom of – Lady and the Tramp.

Sunshine and Walking

Hi friends. I am still feeling pretty lousy.Mom said that’s a lousy way to start a message, but it’s the truth. Even with my meds, my tummy doesn’t feel good and I don’t want to eat. Except once, yesterday, the “make Lexi feel famished” pill kicked in and I gulped down most of a can of k/d.

This morning I wanted to go outside. The back of our house faces the east and the sun had not quite topped the trees. However, a few rays of sunshine pierced through the branches and foliage to make sun puddles on the concrete just outside of our enclosed patio. Mommy carried me out there and held me in the the sun puddles until her back ached and she had to sit down.

After a while we went in, but Mom could tell I was still restless, that I still wanted something. When she asked me if I wanted to go for a walk, I went to the front door, the one we often use to go out for a walk. Mom let me go out without my leash, too! I made it down the stairs ok and we walked side-by-side down the driveway, where I made my usual right turn to walk along the bottom of all the yards. We only went as far as the neighbor’s house. When we got back to our driveway, Mommy asked me if I wanted to keep going and I said yes, so we walked past two more houses to the corner where all the neighbor dogs leave their pee mail. I read what was there and turned left to go down that road for a few more houses. Sometimes I followed Mom, and sometimes she followed me. It was kind of like when we did Freestyle, only without the music and fancy footwork. We live out in the country in a quiet subdivision with only local traffic, and Mom made sure I didn’t wander into the road. She knew there was no chance of me taking off to chase anything.

There were tons of smells and Mom let me explore along the way. It was just like old times. There we were, just the two of us, taking a leisurely Sunday stroll through the neighborhood. Once back home, Mom carried me up our driveway and I am pleasantly tired now. I think the “make the schnauzer famished pill” might be starting to kick in too, so Mom is going to stop typing so she can use her hands to feed the schnauzer.

PAWlympic Recap and Closing Ceremony

All the athletes did superb jobs. Everyone won a gold medal. I could have won all the golds, too. If Mom had just let me enter all the events, I would have all the gold medals. *sigh* She said something about my hip, blah, blah, blah, my knee, blah, blah, blah, uncertain health, blah, blah, blah, her exhaustion from me getting her up at night, blah, blah, blah. Excuses!

So, post-events, I am sneaking behind Mom’s back surprising Mom, showing you my non-entries, with a link to each event.

August 6: Fetching : I’ll pass on this one.

Bestest Treats Ever – A Schnauzer’s Perspective

I, Lexi,  have been working on perfecting my D&D (Disdain and Dump) technique. I think it could be a PAWlympics event. I call this one the Double Dish Tilt.

Notice the fine placement
       Notice the artistic placement

As a reward for my world-class efforts, Mom made me the bestest doggie treats ever. Why, I bet even the cats would love these! The main ingredient is — wait for it — LIVER! One of my good friends, Linda, who comes to visit me at work, brought Mom this recipe. She stole printed it from allrecipes.com, where you can also have your peeps steal use it. Only 3 ingredients:

1 1/2 pounds of beef liver, 2 eggs, and 1/2 cup of whole wheat flour. A few tips and disclaimers from Mom when making it:

  1. Jelly roll pan? Who has a jelly roll pan? I just used a cookie sheet and it worked great.
  2. I only had calf liver in the freezer, and it was a bit more “liquidy” when put in the food processor, so I about doubled the flour and it came out great.
  3. If you are going gluten-free, use brown rice flour.
  4. This is VERY high, quality protein, so it’s great for dogs/cats like Lexi who has been prescribed a high protein diet (to help fight the C) but not so good for dogs/cats with other problems such as UTI’s.

Mom said this was the fastest and easiest dog treat/cookie she ever made, and she has baked a lot of them! Oh be sure to refrigerate. Mom froze half of them. She said if you don’t want to bother following the link, just throw everything in a food processor, spread in a cookie pan lined with parchment, and bake for 15 minutes at 350 F degrees. Let cool and slice. Easy peasy.

Political Announcement of the Utmost Impawtance

Attention! Attention! *clears throat* I wish to announce my Mayoral Running Mate. *drum roll, please*

Noodle!

VM pic with all animated - Copy

With my sprained right knee, I needed someone to do a lot of the running for me, and who better than the best boyfriend in the whole world – Noodle! He is not just a handsome hunk. He is smart and funny and is a great organizer of fun. As a team, we can’t be beat (we hope). Oh, and in case you don’t recognize the other two anipals on the platform with us, to the right is Beautimous Shoko from The Canadian Cats and on the left is Honorable Purrince Siddhartha Henry of Purrince Siddhartha Henry an Lady Mumm’s Purrfect Pad. Shoko is not just beautiful and a good sister to Kali, but is also a vital part of Team Lexi, campaigning across international and species lines. The Handsome Purrince is very impawtant to both me and Noodle, as he encouraged a timid Noodle to take a chance on asking me to be his Valentine last year.

Feel free to grab any of these pawsome buttons, provided by Team Lexi members Sweet William the Scott and his Mom, Lee. Please display them proudly on your sidebar to show your support of Lexi (me) and Noodle for Mayor and Vice-Mayor, respectively.

The other two mayoral Candy Dates, Christmas and Arty, are also announcing their Running Mates today. Hop on over to their blogs with me to get their news!

Lexi for Mayor Reason #11

11. Small government and no taxes

I’ve been thinking. There is so little crime in Blogille that Frank and Ernie’s prestigious law firm can easily handle the cases that come their way. As an aside, I do encourage anyone who is suffering an egregious wrong to contact them. I have watched them in action in my boyfriend Noodle’s case Noodle vs Jamison, and they get justice done.

goldenruleSo where is this leading? Well, I guess it is just that we don’t really need a police force (sorry Sarge) or a lot of rules. You know, that one about treating other anipals like you would want to be treated works just fine. And taxes? Nope. You keep your bones and nip and all the other treats you love. They are yours to enjoy and no taxesshare with your friends, if you want. I know first-hand that when one of us has a need, their friends – both old and new – jump in to help. Yep, no need for taxes; just friendship and kindness and working together to help make Blogville a great place to be.

I also want to send a special thanks to all of you who prayed for me, sent healing thoughts, and/or helped financially. It is all appreciated so much. Mom asks that you continue lifting me up in your thoughts. Now, I think I will go out in the heat to take a quick roll in the grass. It feels so good!

Lexi’s Campaign Tuesday

Last week, Kismet pushed me to think of more reasons that I should be elected Supreme Leader Mayor of Blogville. Chemo has made my brain a bit foggy at times, so I had to call on some of my peers to help me out. Hooch and Rin were the only ones available on short notice, so we planned late into the night. I think their strategy is brilliant: WIN.

Here is Reason #10 to Vote 4 Lexi:

A Working Lunch with a Working Dog
My food’s gone. Is this meeting over?

10. I am a working dog. The above picture is from one of my previous employments. We were wasting no time, having a working lunch.  I understand the challenges of all us working class anipals and peeps and can form a labor party (woo hoo!) to help you.

I am Lexi, the future Supreme Leader Mayor of Blogville.

Pee S: Special thanks to my BFF Sweet William the Scott for working tirelessly to help me track down my famous peers and making sure they felt appreciated with the special pictures he took.

Tips from Lexi: Say Cheese!

Valued Employee

I was featured in St Luke’s June Happenings Newsletter as the Church Dog. I am a valued employee. Below is the main picture. Just click the link and scroll down to page 2 to read the whole article. 🙂

For those who might be wondering, I feel much better today. I have been eating well, and the “urge to go” has finally gone. I decided to enjoy life today. Even though it is too hot to stay outside for long, I have been spending a few minutes throughout the day lazing in the sunshine, smelling the flowers and rolling in the grass.

From Lexi’s Mom: Thank you to everyone for your prayers and POTP. Please continue; the battle isn’t over yet. It’s just great to finally see Lexi feeling good again.

Getting More Treats: Tips and Tricks

I asked my fellow Blogville residents to submit ways they pry treats out of their mostly unsuspecting hoomans, and the response has been great. Read and Learn:

RayFirst, from the pooch who started all this, my buddy Ray :

Getting treats now and then is easy as it only takes a cute look, or an offer to shake a paw etc. If, however, you want to develop treat getting to a fine art, then it will take some work…. but it is well worth the effort. Tip No.1 – Understand your humans’ routines and make sure that you are close by at all food times! The first, and most important step, is to understand (really understand) humans! They may come in all shapes and sizes, and all different personalities, but (contrary to what they believe) they all share similar traits which are useful to for us to understand and use for treat getting. They are, like us, creatures of habit! They establish routines and generally stick to them, so the obvious benefit is to note when they are involved with food. They may be snacking, or preparing food, eating from plates, but when food is on their mind… treats should be on yours! Once you know the routines regarding food, never ever try and go outside during those times because you will simply miss out. Believe me, if you are not around at that time, they will most likely not even think about you. Woof! Ray.
After thinking about this question some more, Ray has one more thing to say:
Tip No.2 – Remember what treats you are given.
This is really important because, although humans are habit driven, they often lose focus and/or forget stuff. As you may know from a recent Post, I got a treat at my usual time however, it was not the treat I usually got. Rather than be satisfied with the fact that I got a treat as usual, I decided that I still needed the treat that I was supposed to get. It worked! I had two treats instead of one!

CosmoMy newest friend Kosmo gives this advice:
I just go in front of Dad and start to stare at his eyes. It normally takes a half minute and I have treats on my mouth. Mom is more difficult, if I stare, she asks, are you sick or what is the problem now, but after her two questions, Dad arrives and so on… I get the treats I wanted. Have a treatfull day!
Kosmo, a cat in faraway Finland

Reilly DennyReilly and Denny, my Florida Cowspot dog friends, have this to say:

BARK BARK BARK – and bark louder – thus the peep will usually give us a treat to keep us quiet – works every time:):)

ChristmasChristmas, our youngest and very handsome Mayoral Candy Date, gives this advice, although I must warn you. I think his Mom took over his blog, so beware:

Well, here’s a tip my mom told me to share with you all. We do lots of training every day…for da dog shows and for learning new tricks and obedience stuffs. Anyway, if I’ve had enough treats for da day or if she doesn’t want me loaded with treats, she won’t feed me da breakfast and instead she’ll keep my kibbles in a bag and train me for all my daily stuff for about an hour. I am a huge eater so I treat kibbles as if they are treats. It’s a great way to treat throughout the day! Your pal who would still rather have treats than kibble, Christmas

kismet Kismet, my only fine feathered friend, gives sage advice, as usual:

Squawk softly.

Upon asking Kismet if he would add “and carry a big stick,” he replied, “Little stick. That’s all I can get into my beak.”

H&ZHailey and Zaphod two more new friends, say this works for them:

In our house, Lady often falls for sad eyes, especially when she is eating something. We stand and we stare until she gives us things.

SHThis, from my very first Blogville kitty friend, Purince Siddhartha Henry (whom I call S.H., he, he):

Not sure that katss have any speshell to way to signal thee Hu’manss fur treets Lexi; how efurr mee doess! Mee gets on thee counter an sittss UNDER the cupberd with mee foodabullss an treet bags inn it…mee sorta ‘chirpss’ an looks deep inn to LadyMum’ss eyess….. gets her efurry time!!!! RileyRiley (my brother) doesn’t have his own blog but still wanted to contribute. He said, “I follow my Dad Andrew around the house, around the yard, or wherever we are, right on his heels to let him know I want a treat. If Andrew sits down, I sit next to him and stare at him – you know, that thing where we plant our thoughts in their heads – until he ‘gets it.’  I don’t stop until I get what I want.”

Sam the poodleSam’s Mom, Monika from Tails Around the Ranch tells us about this pawsome method Sam has:

I’m sure all dogs salivate at the thought of a treat and I’ve learned to work on that natural behavior with dimwitted Sam. His claim to fame is he will sit very patiently when we’re at the hospital [Sam is a therapy dog], staring intently at the high value Zuke’s training treats I bring and when I say, “lick your chops,” he’ll lick one side all the while staring intently. Then when I say “lick the other side,” by golly, he will do it. I’ll tell him to ‘do it again!’, and right on cue, there goes the tongue on the other side again. I think it’s just a reflexive thing [sic] but he seems to have made the connection and he now does it routinely on command. The patients and nurses sure love it. It’s the only trick he does. Paws and kisses, Monika & Sam

Piper, my sweet cousin and friend. My cousin Piper doesn’t have his own blog, but he asked me to share his sure-fire method. In his words:

Simple. I use the schnauzer mind meld technique. It is similar to the Vulcan one, but I don’t have to touch Mom or Dad’s head to do it. It involves an intense stare and thoughts shooting out of my eyes into their minds.

That’s all for this time, friends. I am waiting for a video from Easy and there are more tips I hope to get in. That will be another post. Of course, we can’t have too many ways to ask for our treats!

I am Lexi with the upset tummy. (Let’s not say the word t-r-e-a-t anymore right now, OK?.)

Chemo

Mom is helping me with my blog while I am getting poison chemicals pumped into my body.

Here’s the scoop: I have lumps in my right lung and they are bad. Real bad. The melanoma vaccine takes about 3 months to work. We can’t use it because I will be d-e-a-d before it can work. Yep, it’s that bad. Mom had decided I wasn’t going to get chemo or radiation because she wasn’t going to let anyone make me feel sick and miserable. When the doctor team assured Mom that very rarely do dogs get the bad side effects that people get, she said let’s get it started, then.

So Mom handed me over (traitor) and these otherwise nice people stole about half  drew enough blood to do many tests to be sure my organs are in good enough shape to withstand the chemo. I am a hearty schnauzer and my organs said, “Yes! Hit us with your best shot!” Traitors.  They were so enthusiastic that the dogtor stuck me with another needle and started “infusing” these chemicals into my system. *sigh*

I have to go to my local dogtor in a week to get more blood stolen. Then in another week for the same thing. Then in another week for that plus to get poisoned again. *sigh*

Mommy said she refuses to be “dogless” in one to three months, and that I am the only dog she wants. If determination alone (plus being filled with chemo poisons) will save me, I may live to be an old(er) dog yet!

Oh, I also wanted to let you all know that my wonderful boyfriend Noodle started a GoFundMe to help Mom and Dad with all the vet bills. I guess cancer can be expensive. If you want, you can check out his post

Coming Together for Lexi

to read how you can help – just if you want to, that is.

I am Lexi, cancer patient and Mom’s favorite schnauzer.

Share Your Treat Tips

Colin of meandray.com related how Ray communicated that he didn’t feel he got the usual treat at the usual time, thus scoring treat #2. It got me to thinking. Good as I am at communicating and scoring treats, many of you are just as good (no, Mom, I am not adding the usual “or better” here). Why don’t we share our tactics, thus increasing the probability of getting bigger, better treats for ourselves as well as helping those who haven’t yet acquired this skill. I am not going to announce a “tell how to get a treat” day. Just blog about your favorite treat(s) and how you convince your hooman to give it to you. Whenever you want. If you would like, send me your tip and I will publish it in a week or two with everyone else’s. I will also  include a link to your blog. Just shoot me an email to the address on my sidebar.
