A Thankful Get-Together

Xena: Mommy, Mommy, where’s my breakfast? Mommy, Mommy, when am I going to meet my new friends?

Mom: I’m fixing your breakfast the same as I do first thing every morning, Xena, then we’ll be seeing your Auntie Jen, Uncle Bill and cousins Piper and Ella.

Xena: Have they seen my latest cuteness picture? Are they going to love me?

Lucy: *sigh* I got this one, Mom. Yes Xena, they will love you. I met Auntie Jen and she is a lot like Mom. She’ll fuss over you and hold you and give you kisses. Piper has gotten to be a senior schnauzer, and he has recently gone blind, so take it easy on him, will you? And Ella is going to be MY friend, so paws off.

Mom: Lucy….

Lucy: Ok…she can be your friend too, but mostly mine.

(a few hours later)

Piper: Hi Lucy and Xena. I’m Piper. I used to live here before you did. I knew your sister, Angel Lexi,  87 years before she was an angel. We were BFF’s. We hung together all the time.

And this time, when Mom leaves, I’m goin’ with her. We’re a team, ya’ know.

Hi Lucy, I’m Ella. Look at pretty you! Me and you, we’re the same size! We could be friends. Wanna’ play?

Piper: Excuse me…how did I end up in this play pen? Let me out. There’s nothing wrong with my nose and I smell food.

Piper: That’s better! Oh, hi Aunt Amy. Got anything good there I can have?

So, the humans ate and drank and laughed and talked and enjoyed the day with family and friends who are also family. No one remembered to take pictures of Lucy and Ella playing. They played all day long and became the best friends we all hoped they would be. In fact, we even discussed them going back and forth between our homes in Chattanooga and Nashville each month, but no one was willing to give up their half of the duo for a month at a time.

Piper mostly tried to stay out of their way. Xena tried to keep up with them and did a lot of obnoxious schnauzer puppy yapping. Thank goodness she finally wore herself out.

New Playmates

I have a new playmate. (Mom was so surprised that she didn’t get the video just right, so please overlook that.)

Her name is Xena. I thought and thought and finally realized I had to play more gently with her than I do with Riley. Riley and I play this way, but we are rougher. Now Xena’s not afraid and we are having tons of fun together!

Be still, Xena. Just rest for a moment, OK?

Love and wags, Lucy

I have a new playmate! (I think I could have done a better job on the video than Mommy did, but I was busy playing.  And excuse the gagging at the end…I got some hair stuck in my throat.)

Her name is Lucy. I haven’t had another dog to play with since I left my littermates. Now Lucy is playing nicely with me and I don’t feel like she is going to run me over and smoosh my brains out. We played all day long! Of course, we took little breaks to eat and go potty – outside!  Then we played again until it was time to go to bed. I can’t wait until we play together again tomorrow!

Sister Trials

Hi Lucy.

Come closer. I want to tell you something.

*Whack! Whack! Whack! Whack!

Hey! Leggo my leg!

Why are you being like this, Xena?

I’m bored. Turn your head that way, Lucy. I want to tell you something else.

Whack me once, shame on you. Whack me twice, shame on me.

OK then, I’ll lay paws on you and pray for you to recover from your recent whacking. I am the church puppy, you know.

Me and My Shadow and..eeek!

I was out walking on a bright and sunny day.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, threatening clouds covered the sun and scary bright lights flashed all about me.  But…why can I still see my shadow?

Is it still my shadow? Or have we moved to another dimension where even shadows don’t obey the laws of nature?

Eeeek! What has my Angel Sister Lexi become in this dimension?

Bwahaha! Happy Howl-o-ween! ~Angel Lexi

Xena the Schnauzer Warrior Princess

Woof! The New Woman tricked me into starting a diary only to put it on something with webby feet for the whole world to read. I’m glad I didn’t say anything embarrassing. Except for the part where I soiled in the kennel. And maybe the part about being afraid. I remembered my note to myself and asked The New Woman what my real name is. I learned two things: 1. The New Woman’s name is “Mommy” and 1. My name is Xena the Schnauzer Warrior Princess. That’s why I’m a little bit embarrassed about being afraid. I don’t think warrior princesses are supposed to be afraid of anything!

The New Woman Mommy has some pictures for everyone to see. I also learned that’s what she is doing when she picks up that thing that she takes with her everywhere and points it at me.

The first night in my new furever home, an inspiration came to me. It was like another, wiser schnauzer was whispering in my ear. I had an uncontrollable urge to stand on The Man while he laid in bed.  Then I felt like I should hit him on his head with my head, but I resisted.

Oh, and I learned The Man is called Daddy. So, now I live with Lucy and Mommy and Daddy. There is another dog here who is even bigger than Lucy, but he is ignoring me and won’t even tell me his name. That’s OK, I have enough new stuff to deal with right now anyhow. I’ve had my brekkies and pottied and it’s raining, so I think I will *yawn* take a nap on Mommy’s lap now. Tomorrow I’ll tell you mo…zzzzz.

The Story I Love by Angel Lexi

You didn’t think Blogville could get away with telling about favorite stories without me, did you? After all, I starred in my favorite story.

WOZ 3

That’s me, way over on the right in Candice Dorothy’s arms. I am watching Mom for my next cue.  This was in Georgia, my birth state, at the second WOZ production I starred in.

I was Toto is three different productions. The first time was at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre and remains my and Mom’s favorite. It had the best crew and best director and biggest attendance. Over a period of six weeks seven thousand people came to see me perform. It was my first time as a thespian schnauzer. As soon as I hit the stage in front of an audience the first night, I knew I had found my passion. I was called a ham and a stage hog. What is it with the references to pigs? Could I help if I was enthusiastic during every scene, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, as well as during the afternoon on Saturdays and Sundays? Could I help it if I danced back and forth on the stage with the Tin Man during one of his “solo” performances? OK, so maybe I could have helped that one. That’s the time I got called “that dog.” But I had been watching him for several performances and I knew the steps to the dance!

WOZ Collage

Mommy, thank you for helping me be the best Toto ever; for all the rides and treats and training and prompting and encouragement when I got tired, especially during my last performance. I remember how you held me and explained to me that it would be my last time on the stage, ever. You said you knew I was 11 years old and exhausted after performing once already that day. And you asked me to give it my all, my best, one last time. And I did. I shone. I performed like my life depended on it. I gave it everything I had, and you knew that. You were so proud of me, and that made me happy. I was your star.

As you remain, my dear Angel Lexi-Toto.

You can go to the Blogville Arts and Entertainments page to read more stories by more of our friends.

Visiting with Piper

I pinned Mom down again to tell you about her and Dad’s visit with Piper and Piper’s peeps. I know Piper from Blogville’s Spring Break, but he was pretty busy with his best girl, Shelby. Mom says Piper is her nephew. I think that might make him my cousin. Also, he and my boyfriend Riley are really tight.

Riley and Piper in 2012

Piper’s heart condition makes him fall over and not be able to move if he gets too excited, and that’s why I couldn’t go. In a way, it’s kind of nice to think someone would be that excited to see me. Plus, I had such a good time on my vacation…but then you already know that!

Piper’s sister Ella was there too. She likes to be close to people just like me.

Mom and Dad had a good time on their weekend vacation. There was lots of laughter and good food. Mom took some pictures of my cousin Piper.

Mom said please excuse that he is not bathed or groomed. His heart gives out and he falls over when those things happen. I know that not getting a bath or having your furs stolen sounds great to most of us pups, but I think Piper would rather get a bath than have a bad heart. 😦 Like Angel Lexi, Piper is black and silver, and they look a lot alike. Anyhoo, Mom says if you have an extra good thought or prayer you can spare, Piper could really use it.

Tomorrow I am going to try to pin down Mom again to tell you all about our my chewie.com delivery and food!

Moments in a Day

Amy here. It’s been a hectic two weeks leading up to Easter. I work at a church, so that should explain it. I keep thinking the pastor is going to keel over. Besides Easter prep, she had a wedding, a baptism and planned for a funeral for next Saturday. She has had church members admitted to the hospital, and others needing her at their homes. On Easter morning, we are welcoming thirteen new members and baptizing two more folks. This morning, my boss – who is the pastor of this church and has become my friend – walked in with two bouquets of flowers. When I jokingly asked, “Are those for me?” she said, ” Yes!” She wanted to show her appreciation of all my hard work and our partnership in making things happen.

I was glad when my Amazon order showed up in the mail this morning. Do you love Anne Lamott’s works as much as I do? Two days ago (yes, I have Prime shipping with Amazon) I had decided that her new book, Hallelujah Anyway, would be a perfect gift to the pastor to just say thanks for who she is. We are so often on the same wave length!

As I sat waiting for the 12 page Easter bulletins to finish printing this afternoon, I also gave thanks for this church who honored their church dog with a memorial service and have held me in prayer as I continue to work my way through the grief of losing my heart dog. And, mostly, I give thanks to my risen Savior whose resurrection and love gives my heart hope. I wish my friends a joyous Easter and a blessed Passover.

Peace.

A Beach Party Invite

Dear Shelby,

When Aunt Amy told me about the Spring Break Beach Party, all I could think about was taking you to the beach. I know you don’t really like water, so we don’t have to go swimming or participate in the Scuba Diving or Surfing events. But wouldn’t it be great fun to run free on the beach?

Shelby, you will be so beautiful running with me!

We could also join in the Treasure Hunt — maybe we will find some bones to chew! And the Amusement Park looked like fun too. I promise we will only go on the rides you like.

So, what do you say?   Yes  or    Yes  (or  _ Maybe, but probably YES)
Your biggest admirer,
Piper

P.S. Your protective brother Sidney can come, too, but he will have to find his own ride.

Nextdoor

Our neighborhood, like many others , has a Nextdoor website group. In short, it is a closed group for just the neighborhood folks and surrounding areas. People can post what is going on in the area in real time: crime; items for sale; services available; questions, especially about needing help with something, such as who is the best person to contact for a service. Through Nextdoor I recently found an individual to work on my old pontoon boat’s outboard motor. I dropped it off at his house this afternoon.

My first boating dog was my precious Sammy. When he succumbed at age 11 during his second bout with cancer, I renamed the boat the Sammy Joe after him.

0319171935-1
Lexi wanted me to rename the boat the Lexi B. However, she realized Sammy only got that honor after he had left for the rainbow bridge, so she decided she was in no hurry. Now, after losing both my precious boat dogs, I can no longer bear to take the Lexi B out on the lake. Unless the mechanic decides to buy it -his eyes lit up when I said I wanted to sell it and gave him a price – I will park the Lexi B in front of the house with a for sale sign. I’ll also put it on Nextdoor, with this photo:

And so ends another chapter – a long and fun chapter -in the story of my life.

Are We Still in Kansas?

lexi-dorothyFive years ago, Lexi was recruited to help the Chattanooga Symphony Opera (CSO) promote their instrumental score of the Wizard of Oz (WOZ) while the much-loved film played on a screen behind them. On March 2, 2012, Lexi’s new “Dorothy” – who Lexi knew from a different role in the previous production of WOZ – came to pick her up in a Pedi cab. They were to travel the streets and businesses of Chattanooga for the CSO promotion. On that day, one of Lexi’s life-long dreams came true: she was allowed in a restaurant!

Something else happened that day, too, while Lexi and her “Dorothy” were riding around town. As the line goes in the play, “The wind began to blow.” The darkening sky showed tinges of green, with swirling, ominous clouds. People looked up at the sky, stopped them and asked, “How did you manage the weather?” before running for shelter. Meanwhile, I was shut in the basement of the church, praying that Lexi didn’t get whisked off to Oz.

Note: Multiple tornadoes touched down in the Tennessee Valley area that day, doing extensive damage.

Self-Portrait Saturday

A bit late, but better late than never, right? The self-portrait challenge results are being displayed on the Arts & Entertainment Website, where you will see over 20 self-portraits as well as ours, below.

Preparing for the Big Day

Piper is head over paws about Shelby, and we think Shelby may feel the same way. However, not wanting to take any chances of someone else sweeping in, Piper screws up his courage and asks…
Pipers valentine to Shelby

In other news, Gracie went to Florida to meet up with Noodle for the big party tomorrow. Since Lexi loved them both, they decided to honor her by going to the Valentine’s Day Bash together as friends. They thought it would be a good idea to get to know each other first…

Listen, Gracie. I think Mom’s calling us for dinner.

You kids have fun and don’t do anything Lexi wouldn’t have. (Oh boy, I think I just opened it up for too much fun…)
