It started out with me going out front because Mom wanted to get a picture of me next to her dying hostas. She sure does kill a lot of plants. Or maybe she doesn’t kill them, something else does, and she just doesn’t notice until it’s too late. I’m just glad she’s better with dogs than she is with plants. Can I get an amen on that? Or maybe just a head nod?
What I didn’t know is that I was walking into the bowels of hell. It was so hot I coulda fried an egg on the sidewalk. That is, if I had an egg. Uh, hey Mom, can I please have an egg? Is it suppertime yet?
This is Lucy, Ace Reporter, on the Groom Beat. Today I want to introduce Bailey. Bailey is almost as big as my little sister, but she is “small boned.” She is a Chorkie – a chihuahua and yorkie mix. Even as small as she is, it used to take someone holding her for Mom to be able to cut her nails. This time, however, Bailey behaved wonderful on the table. That’s a grooming term, you know – “on the table.” Bailey doesn’t have an undercoat – another grooming term – so Mom always gives her a “scissor cut.” Yes, another – well, you know.
It was Bailey’s peep brother’s birthday, so they dropped her off on the way to a birthday brunch. When Mom went outside to greet them and get Bailey, the birthday boy got out of the car and told Mom it’s his birthday and he’s 22, and then he gave her a big hug. It was hard to understand him, and he looked different than other peeps I’ve met. But I could sense that there was something special about him.
When it was time to pick up Bailey, her peeps were still at the restaurant and waiting on some of their food. So Mom brought Bailey upstairs to play with Xena. Xena started out by being her barky self until Bailey jumped up onto Mom’s lap and laid down the law to Xena. When she got down, Xena jumped up. Without a second thought, Bailey jumped back up and they shared Mom’s lap – or at least the chair – until Bailey’s folks got here.
Xena: I don’t think this is what was supposed to happen.
Three years. Three years since Lexi lost her battle and I was forced to let her go. I can’t lie. It wasn’t pretty. I waited too long? She had seizures all night and was mostly gone by the time the needle went into her vein. Don’t we always feel guilt, thinking we either acted too soon or waited too long. I’m one of those waited too long people. I kept asking her if she was ready, and I never got a yes. At least I never understood her if it was ever a yes. Lexi stayed with me for my sake for as long as she could. In the end, neither one of us could stop it with a simple no.
Lexi was my heart dog, and so much more. She was my partner, my inspiration. I clearly remember the evening at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre when I felt God tell me that He had given Lexi to me to bring joy to others. And she did. That’s how she lived her life. She brought happiness and laughter – even if it was only for one night – to 7,000 people during her six week, 24 performance run as Toto.
She went on to become a therapy dog, where she continued to bring joy to folks, this time one-on-one. There was the hospital worker – an elderly black gentleman who was also an ordained preacher – who never touched the therapy dogs at the physical rehab hospital. He was a bit afraid of them. When he saw Lexi, he smiled, reached out to pet her, and said, “This dog is something special. God has blessed her.” During the same visit she sat in the lap of a young man in a wheelchair while his therapist chatted with me and another worker. I always kept an eye on what was happening with her when we were doing therapy, or “therapizing” as she and I called it. Every time the young man stopped petting Lexi, she nudged his hand and he would start petting her again. This went on for about 15 minutes, quite a long visit compared to most. As we were walking away, I heard his therapist say, “That was great! You actually lifted your hand.”
Lexi especially loved going to the Children’s Hospital, which she did faithfully every month for 10 years.
Lexi’s last visit to the children’s hospital, August 2016
Even before I had this revelation about Lexi’s mission in life, she was busy bringing joy to people. For three years Lexi rode for an hour every week with me and Jeff to help teach ballroom dance to a group of home schooled teens. She even knew the halfway point where we pulled off the highway to get dinner at Mickey D’s. She was a Mickey D’s type of girl. Lexi would stand up and stare out the window when we would be getting close to the exit. Of course, she always got the fries. Back to teaching dance. How can a dog teach dance, you might ask. Here’s how: The kids would be lined up with their partner, trying out the dance step we had just taught them. Lexi would walk along the line of students, watching each one. She would stop in front of a dancing couple and bark. By then, everyone knew what that meant, and the other students would laugh while the “chosen” ones would hang their heads. I would go over and ask them to show me what they were doing, and there was always something wrong with it. Somehow, Lexi knew. Then we would put on the music for them to practice, but before they could practice, Lexi would come to me and stand on her hind legs for me to take her front paws so she could “show them” how they were supposed to do the step. OK, so maybe she couldn’t exactly do the step correctly, but in her mind she sure was. That done, she left everyone in peace to practice. By the way, rumba was her favorite.
When Lexi was just one year old, my elderly mother moved from Pennsylvania to be near me, and started out in an apartment within a block of where I lived. Mom loved dogs and kept Lexi every day while I was at work. It was a good arrangement for them both. On one occasion, when I came to pick up Lexi, Mom declared that Lexi was a “kind” dog. She said she had felt so sick all day and Lexi just laid her paw gently on her leg to comfort her. Eventually, Mom broke her hip and the rehab didn’t help, so she ended up in a nursing home. When we would go to visit, Lexi wouldn’t stop to see any of the other patients until after her visit with her Grandma. On the way out, however, she would “therapize” anyone who needed her. One time we thought Mom was dying after aspirating her chewing gum. Jeff, my son, and I were sitting vigil around her bed, with Lexi sitting on the bottom of the bed, never taking her eyes off her for an hour. Suddenly Mom opened her eyes, lifted herself up and cried, “Lexi!” with a great big smile on her face. I must admit, that was the only time I ever felt jealous of my dog.
Jeff and I had planned our backyard wedding for October 16, and my Mom passed suddenly on my birthday, exactly one month before that. Because Mom loved Jeff so much we decided to go ahead with the wedding. Of course, Lexi was in attendance and hoping for a big slice of wedding cake. We felt like Mom was also there, smiling at us.
Did I mention that Mickey D’s was Lexi’s favorite food? During the last year of her life, she was shopping with me at the local Ace Hardware store. I checked out and was ready to leave, but Lexi had other plans. The cashier had not given her a treat – you know, like you get at the pet store or the bank drive through. So she refused to leave, and just stood there staring at the cashier, as if by sheer force of will she would make her give her a treat. The cashier kept apologizing that she didn’t have anything to give to Lexi, and I finally got her to at least step back so other people could pay for their purchases. Normally, I would have picked her up and carried her to the car, but my arms were full of what I had bought. After a very long five minutes, it dawned on me that there was a McDonald’s across the street. I said, “Lexi, do you want to go to McDonald’s?” She looked at me and headed for the door in consent. Of course, we went to Mickey D’s and she got an ice cream.
Lexi also got Mickey D’s on most of her birthdays.
I love birthdays and I love MickyD’s!!
So, even though I try to eat healthy, and even though I mostly eschew sugar, tonight, for supper, I honored Lexi. While Jeff’s gluten-free pizza was in the oven, I drove the mile down the road to Mickey D’s and bought a hamburger, small fry and hot fudge sundae. And since they were on special for only $1, I added a large Dr. Pepper. I ate it all, and it was good. So now I sit here, wired up on sugar, unable to sleep, thinking about my girl. Lexi. I hope, wherever she is, there is a Mickey D’s.
Xena: I’ve heard that the weather is always a safe topic to talk about, so let’s start there today. It’s been stinkin’ rotten hot. It’s been so hot we haven’t even had our walks. In fact, it’s been hotter than a boy in heat.
Lucy: Don’t you know that boys don’t go into heat?
Xena: Sure I do. But you’d have yelled at me if I’da said that other word that starts with a “b”. So I’m making the weather a safer topic, ya see. So then it cooled off a bit after it rained cats and hogs and…
Lucy: It’s dogs.
Xena: What’s dogs?
Lucy: What it rained.
Xena: Yes, it rained. Anyhoo, that cooled it off enough for us to go out and play. I dared Lucy to try to catch me, and off we were on a chase through the dog lot.
I ran and ran in circles, and sometimes Lucy ran off the patio and tried to catch me, but I was too fast! I was in Warrior Princess mode, don’tcha know. All the grass was gone right there in front of the patio door, causing the dirt to get all soft and wet. Lucy got me on my back there and rolled me around a bit. (I let her.)
Lucy: Yep. Then Xena got me on my back and rolled me around a bit. too. (I let her.) After we’d done that for a while, Mom came over to see how muddy we were. I wasn’t muddy at all. I have super hero hair. It glows in the sunlight and keeps me from getting too hot. Fleas and ticks slide off it like a 5-year-old child off a water slide. The cold can’t get through it, and now we know the mud doesn’t stick to it. I got a pass on a bath.
Xena: I have super hero hair too. It doesn’t fall out all over the house and end up in big piles around the walls and the furniture. All that nasty hair around the house belongs to my sister. Apparently, though, mine isn’t mud-repellent.

We went to the Obedience Club of Chattanooga (OCC) on Sunday and practiced with my little friend Meg (on left) and her Mom and her 13-year-old brother, a mini-pin named Titus. Titus and Angel Lexi used to do Freestyle together.
Miss Fay was having trouble playing my music and recording my routine all at the same time, so it took several tries. By the fourth try, I was tired and getting a bit uninterested in the whole thing. And Mommy lost count at the end of my our routine and messed up the ending. At least it was just practice, and not a “trial.” It’s still pretty good, so if you want to see it, just hit the button to make it start.
That last part where we swirl around each other? I made that part up and Mommy liked it so much she named it the Viennese Waltz and kept it in our routine.
Xena: You might think that me and Lucy are always competing and arguing, but it isn’t so. We play together and team up when it counts. On this certain day we both saw a lizard trespassing near the front of our house.
Me and Lucy, we’re a team.
Lucy: OK, Xena, you chase it and if you can catch it, it’s yours.
Xena: So Lucy laid down and I chased the lizard… right into her mouth!
Lucy: Thanks, friend. I want you to know how much I enjoyed that lizard. I saved you the tail, you know.
Xena: But Daddy took it from me and put it in my food dish for later. Then Mommy came home and said, “How disgusting!” and threw it in the garbage. Phth. I didn’t really want it anyhow.

“Mommy puts essential oils on it to keep the bugs away from me. It didn’t work on keeping Achilles away, though, BOL.You promise to stop bugging me if I what?! Well, OK, maybe just one quick kiss.
That was a mistake, ’cause then what I think I overheard Achilles say to my Daddy was, “Mr. Jeff, can I marry your daughter, the little one, the pretty one?” “
(Back to the present)
Xena: OK, OK, but I didn’t marry him, did I? Hey, wait, is that Morty?

Xena: I couldn’t understand a word he oinked. He must be speaking pig-Latin.
Lucy: I found an on-line interpreter. Morty said, “Don’t believe those goons. I am the most important pig in this house. I run this joint.”
Xena: Well, it’s true he is the onlypig living in that house, so he must be the most important piggie there, BOL!
It sure was nice getting to hear from out friends. We both hope to see them again soon, along with our Aunty Jen and Uncle Bill.

Last weekend our peeps brother Adam came over and spent the night so we could celebrate his birthday together. You might remember Adam from when he helped plant the hostages . We were so excited to see him! Adam goes outside and sits on the patio a lot so he can blow stinky smoke out of his mouth. Regardless, we like to go out with him, at least until it gets too hot, even for us. On Sunday, our other peeps brother Andrew was supposed to come over for pizza and to visit and to celebrate his our brother’s birthday. Mommy told him 5:00, but to try to come early if he could. We all decided that when if he came early that Mommy would order the pizza and we could eat then. We all got pretty hungry.
Why isn’t Andrew here yet?!
Adam got so hungry that he ate a bowl of cereal. Mommy said she would wait until 4:30, then order the pizza. Before she went to get it, me and Lucy asked her if we could eat just a little early so that she wouldn’t have to, you know, interrupt the celebration or so that – good God forbid – the pizza get cold while she was preparing our dinner. She saw the wisdom in this and got our supper ready. We thought she would be in a big hurry to get out the door to get the hot pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms and double cheese *drool* and not make us “Wait!” for our supper. Yeah, like that was gonna happen.
Come on, Mom, say it!
Say it, say it, say it, say it!
Mom: “FREE!”
As soon as we gobbled down our suppers, Mommy headed out the door to pick up the Dominoes pizza – Adam’s favorite. By the time she got back, Andrew had arrived and everyone gobbled down their suppers. Then came the DQ ice cream cake!
I don’t know what to wish for.
Adam made his wish, and I think he probably wished for a schnauzer like me. He couldn’t tell or it might not come true.
The celebration continued the next day with lobster and shrimp and steak – all of Adam’s very favorite foods. Everyone was too busy stuffing their faces enjoying their meals to think about sharing with the poor pups in the house. We did get some ice cream cake. That was our first time ever to get ice cream or frosting or cake. Now I know why the peeps keep it all for themselves!
Adam and Andrew have both gone to their own homes, and we are waiting to see what else happens this week!
Xena: Hi, hi, hi! Guess what? Wait, I’ll tell you. Mommy read about how bad bennies are for people…
Lucy: It’s benadryl, Xena. Bennies are something else. We don’t get those.
Xena: Well, we don’t get the dryl stuff anymore, either. That’s what I’m here to tell everyone about. So anyhow, as I was saying, Mommy thought, “Hmm, if they are that bad for people, then they can’t be good for dogs, either.” She said you could read about it here if you want to. But keep on reading my story, too. Mommy thought I had changed because I had turned two years old. I was mostly laying around on the love seat and didn’t want to play. The only things I was still enthusiastic about were food and Freestyle. Friday morning, after reading that article, Mommy only gave me a Xertec for my allergies, and no bennies.
Lucy: Xena, I told you, it’s not bennies. And Xertec is spelled Zyrtec.
Xena: No, like I told you before, it’s XERTEC like my name XENA,
Sorry folks. Sometime Lucy thinks she knows more than me. So later in the day when Mommy called to let Daddy know she was finally on her way home from work, he told her that he didn’t know what caused this big change, but that I had been running all over the house with my stuffies.
Do you want to wake up and play with me, Ell?
I had started playing with Lucy again, too. I ran outside with my bully horn and even came back to get another toy to play with in the yard. Mommy knew why, and had conflicting emotions. She was very sad that she had been suppressing my joy, and very happy that I was still the same puppy she knew, and hadn’t really changed.
Xena Schnauzer Warrior Princess is back!
So instead of those bad old bennies – Lucy, don’t even say it – I am getting a bath about every other day *pthhh* with BioHex Shampoo with Chlorhexidine and Miconazole. It has microsilver and ceramide in it. (Mommy helped me with those words.) Now I am hardly itching at all and I’m wide awake and ready to rumble! ( heard that last part on TV when the folks were gone.) Anyone want to play?
A while ago, Lucy caught a lizard that fell off the house. She swallowed it down whole. Ever since then we’ve been hunting lizards in front of the house. This time, though, I want to be the one who catches a lizard.
Good. Lucy’s not looking. I can find me a lizard and catch it all by myself. I see one! Here little lizard. Come to Mama.Wait! You’re going the wrong way!
Well, you know the saying, “The lizard that sees me and runs away, lives to be hunted another day.”
Xena Schnauzer Warrior Princess
Here’s my saying, “The lizard that falls down off the house, lands in my open, waiting mouth.” Lucy
Lucy: As promised, here is the rest of our story about the visit. We had a good time with our company. Ella and I hung out and played a little.
Ella’s already eight years old, so she doesn’t like to play as much as she used to. Achilles walked in like he was the big boy on the block, if you know what I mean.
Xena: Since you brought the subject up, I saw something that I’m going to share.
Lucy: Xeeenaaa……
Xena: (singing) Achilles and Lucy sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes..
Lucy: XENA!
Ella: Hey, girlfriend, hey. It’s OK, he’s just my bro, nothing more.
Lucy: Moving on, Xena forgot to tell you yesterday about what happened as soon as Aunty Jen walked in the house carrying Morty. Morty was squealing and carrying on. Then Aunty Jen handed him to Mom.
Morty quieted right down and dozed in Mom’s arms. Aunty Jen said, “Bill, didn’t I tell you this is what would happen!?” She knew Morty would feel the love.
Achilles: Hey, what about the story about me and Lucy?
Lucy: Moving on, Xena also forgot to show you this picture of Morty in his pack and play at the child’s birthday party yesterday. Did you know mini piglets use a litter box? The pellets in it are also used in horse stalls, and they turn into sawdust when they get wet.
Also, did you know that the bottom of a piggy’s foot is as soft as mine? And that pigs have no upper lip, just a snout?
That’s the end of our story for this time. Love and kis…er…wags, Lucy
First there was my meet and greet with Morty in his rope harness.
Then we did a proper “Hello, I will be your friend.”
Next, it was Lucy’s turn.
Lucy: I finally got to sniff someone else’s bee hind.
Morty enjoyed grazing on our clover, so Lucy thought it would make him feel more at home if she joined him.
We discovered that Morty loves his belly rubbed, just like us.
It started getting really hot, so we all came in the house. Daddy had paid someone to come fix our air conditioning, so it was much cooler. Soon, Morty left with his folks because he was going to be the star at a child’s birthday party. (He didn’t want to wear Angel Lexi’s star hat, either.)
After 87 hours they all came back and it was suppertime. We watched – with fascination – how Morty eats.
That’s water in the blue bowl, and piggy food mixed with fresh veggies in his food dish.
Morty, Ella, Achilles, Aunty Jen and Uncle Bill have to leave soon, so we’ll finish telling you all about our visit tomorrow.
Xena – The Visit Ends: Our visitors finally went home after peeing being with us for 10 days.
This is me, Xena, and my new friends, Laila and Louis. Can I take this bone that I found home with me?Sorry about ruining your big rug.Bye, bye, Miss Amy. We liked being here.
Xena – A Hat? No Thanks. Mommy decided once again to try putting Angel Lexi’s hat on me. A cast member gave it to her when she was in the Wizard of Oz. It has a star on it to show she was the star of the show.
Does my expression tell it all?
Lucy – No board, just groom: Chaz was supposed to stay with us last week, but something happened that his folks couldn’t go away.
Instead, he just came for a groom.
Xena – Heat and a flower or something like that: It was hotter than a witch’s ti…
Lucy – Xena! No!
Xena – What?
Lucy – The saying is “colder” not “hotter.”
Xena – Oh. Anyway, it’s been hot. So finally one day there was a slight break in the heat and we convinced Mommy to take us for a walk. I thought I’d better leave as much pee mail as I could, ’cause who knows when we will be out walking again, right? And we even saw some pretty flowers.
Lucy – More visitors coming this weekend: I found out that we are finally going to meet Morty.
I’m not sure how that’s going to go, but we are all hoping for the best.
One thing I am sure about is that I can hardly wait to see Ella again. You know we are tight! So, when I heard she was coming to visit, I shouted out a “Hey, girl” to her. She promptly responded the same to me.
“Hey girl, hey!”
That went on for a while. Then I said, “I can’t wait to hang out with you. Just one thing, Ella. This here is MY Dad, OK?“
She said as long as I understood that Aunty Jen is HER Mom, we’re cool.
Oh, solo mio…arrooo!
Xena – Daddy is MY Daddy too, you know!
This is Lucy and Xena(she means Xena and Lucy)joining the LLB Gang (especially Rosy) for Flower Friday.
Lucy, Ace Reporter here with another episode of Grooming with Mom. Today we feature Marley, a border collie or Sheltie mix, no one knows for sure.
At home before groom
Marley is a rescue and her Mom thinks she is six or seven years old. Mom thinks she might be just a bit older, but you never tell a lady that. Did you know that Angel Lexi used to bark at anyone who called her old? She preferred “mature.” So, we think Marley is mature. She is also a bit plump, te, he. But she’s also a very nice girl. She was so scared that Mom called Dad on the phone (he was upstairs in his office) and said, “Send Lucy down; Marley needs her zen.” So down I went, and sent tons of soothing thoughts Marley’s way.
After groom
Mom helped Marley off the grooming table so we could visit while she waited for her Mom. I only have one question.
Why is everyone so dang interested in my behind!?
