Meeting at the Bridge on Thankful Thursday

First, thanks to Angel Brian, who is hosting Thankful Thursday, as well as Angel Sammy for the great picture every week!

Xena: We’re especially thankful to Miss Pam at Two Spoiled Cats who hosts the poem every week. Me and Mom were real late even thinking about doing our weekly poem, and got over-excited when we saw what is this week’s poem. Yep, we wrote the poem for it and posted it last Thursday. Miss Pam loved the poem and told us to go ahead and post it again this week. So for those who didn’t see it then, here you go. And those who did, well, maybe you would like to read it again. Oh, and I do want to clear Angel Lexi’s name for the mistake. She didn’t know when it was supposed to post. (Whew, glad I got that off my chest.) Here we go…

I’ve been consulting with Angel Lexi about today’s picture. She said she could jump into the picture and help me. Y’all know that our Riley crossed the bridge a year ago last Thanksgiving. He and Lexi didn’t have a great relationship cause she always tried to boss him around and he wasn’t allowed to do anything about it. But that all changed now that they are angels. You’ll see…

Meeting at the Bridge by Angels Lexi and Riley

Lexi: Riley, I’m happy to see you again.
You’re somewhere safe, and here we’ll be friends.
No need to fear, Ri; let me take your paw.
The Bridge is safe, soon you’ll be in awe.

Riley: I feel much younger, with no aches and no bloat.
I’m feeling like I have wings and can float.
I’ll run to you, Lexi, to the other side
Where I’ll feel the peace and love our Lord provides.

Lexi: This is my unicorn, Spike is his name.
Riley: A unicorn, huh? We’ll all play a game!
Lexi: Hurry on over, we’ll go see the Big Guy.
Riley: I know he’ll love me. Watch! I think I can fly!

Lexi: Well, that poem worked well, Riley, What do you think?
Riley: I’ve got a warm, tingly feeling in my heart.
Lexi: It’s probably just indigestion.
Riley: It’s *blaaat* yep, at least it doesn’t smell.

The End

Xena: Wow, I sure didn’t expect that! I’m thankful that I’m still here with my Mommy, and well. I hope I have many more years with her and Daddy. But at least I know that when it’s my time to go, I won’t be alone at the Bridge, and I’m thankful for that too.

Lucy: Even though I’m really healthy, I’m older than you, so I might get to see Angel Riley again before you do, Xe. We used to be good friends and I’m sure we will be again some day. In the meantime, I’m hungry and want more food! I’m thankful that Mom got me some chicken from the grocery with bones in it to crunch! Yummm.

Chia: I’m thankful Mom lets me have the wings to eat. She always watches me while I eat them (I think so Lucy doesn’t steal it away from me). It’s been cold this week, but I’m thankful for the sunpuddles to nap in!

All: We’re thankful for you, our friends, and how much we know you care about us!!!!

Fond Memories on Happy Tuesday

Thanks to Miss Sandee at Comedy Plus for hosting Happy Tuesday Blog Hop!

We often think about our big (angel) brother, Riley. Today, Mom saw his harness still hanging next to the door, beneath a safety jacket for walking in the dark. So we wanted to share a couple of pictures of him with happy memories. It is from 5 years ago today.

And another smile from almost 7 years ago:
Lucy: Hey Xena, do you remember when you and Riley had the bed war? You took his bed, so…

…he took yours!

Xena: Yep, those were fun times (I think I won that particular battle, BOL!)

Wishing everyone lots of happy times to make into happy memories!

Celebrating Valentine’s with My Furry Friends

I’ve been around blogville for 8 of my 9 years here one earth. I thought I’d share a few of my valentines with you, if you don’t mind.

First, MY first Valentine’s Day in my furever home, 2017:

“…Until this year, I never got to celebrate Valentine’s Day, so I didn’t know what to expect. I got a card in the mail addressed just to me!…I don’t know who Madeline Rose is, but it still made me feel good. 🙂 Amy said it was really from some good friends [Uncle Bill and Auntie Jen] I haven’t met yet. Oh boy, I can hardly wait to meet them!

When Riley found out about my card, he got jealous! While we were playing, he whispered in my ear.

Lucy, will you be my Valentine?

And I whispered back…

Yes, Riley, I like you lots.

After that, Riley taught me how to deadie my only toy.

…and then you rip off the arms.

Then came 2018…

“Just when I was feeling really low ’cause of my (ex)boyfriend skipping out on me, a very handsome kittie with a heart as big as Texas (or Canada) put a smile on my face and wag in my tail. Purrince Siddhartha Henry sent me my first ever Valentine’s Day Card.

“Yes! I will be your Valentine, Siddhartha Henry. (I think that will make me your Purrincess for the day.)”

Just a quick note here: I confess to being “bi.” I love both dogs and cats. I hope no one thinks less of me for that. OK, moving on to my 2019 valentine.

Moving on in 2019…

At some point, Big Boy and I got to be boyfriend and girlfriend…

“I got so excited about Valentine’s Day this year that I made my honey a pretty card with my picture on it and sent it to him early. Here it is. Do you see my best happy face? I hope my pose isn’t too provocative. I sure do hope BB likes my card. I made it with love.

Look what Big Boy sent me! He even put me in a heart.  Don’t we look like we belong together? Yes, Big Boy! I will be your Valentine!!”

Today, 2025:

Dear Achilles, I hope you don’t mind getting the same card again this year. I realized I want to do all the same things with you. It just made sense to send it again.

Still your best (and only) girl,

Lucy

Our Christmas Card to You

Xena: Well, as we mentioned on Christmas Card Day, Mommy was a bit late sending our card off to get printed. Then it took 87 days to get here. And by then Mommy was deep into the flu. So only the cards to the immediate family got sent, and then barely!

We all hate that you aren’t going to get our paper card, but we wanted to be sure you know that this one that we posted on Christmas Card Day is for you. So print it or save it or just enjoy it here.

Merry Christmas, with lots of love from all of us pups and Mom Amy and Dad Jeff!

Sunday Selfie

Xena: Thanks to The Cat on My Head for hosting Sunday selfies. Since Sawyer asked so nicely for everyone to join in, we took a vote and…

Chia: We did NOT vote. Why do you always have to say that?

Xena: Lucy and I voted without you. Anyhoo, as I was saying, we decided to give this Sunday to our dear Riley, who crossed the Bridge last Wednesday. We also want to thank Miss Ann from Zoolatry for making the picture even prettier.

We love you, Riley!

Riley – A Memorial

Xena: I wanted to help post some pictures of the brother we were all thankful to have.

Yes, were. Riley crossed the Rainbow Bridge the day before Thanksgiving. It’s been a sad few days, and we really hate to see our brother Andrew so sad. But, as it had to be, it was him who finally made the decision, and we could all see that Riley was ready. Poor Ri-boy was in a lot of pain with no hope of it getting better, so Andrew did the loving thing.

Miss Ingrid, who has Benji and Dalton, made us this beautiful momento picture.

Here are pictures Mommy has taken of Riley throughout the years. She says to please be sure to read the captions in the pictures.

You will leave a big hole in our hearts and our home, sweet Riley. We love you, now and forever.

Thanksgiving for Our Riley

Today, appropriately enough, it’s Thankful Thursday on Thanksgiving Day. Through many tears, we all give thanks for our big, sweet boy, who left us yesterday for the Bridge. The last two days he gave us clear signs that he was ready…ready to be free of pain; ready to breathe easily again; ready to give up the trials of this life and wait for His Person Andrew on the Other Side.

At the only “vet place” he ever liked going, he ate Hershey’s Kisses as the kind tech fed them to him, a sweet treat that had always been forbidden. But now it couldn’t hurt him. His Person Andrew, Jentry, and I sat on the floor with him, gently stroking him, reminding him of the fun parts of his life, and going through a box of kleenex as we said our goodbyes and fed him more chocolate.

The vet came in and administered a sedative through the catheter that had just been placed in his leg. While holding back tears herself, she listened to our stories about Riley. She shared that every time she had to do this, she also cried after she got home. Then the final injection went into the catheter and he slipped peacefully away.

Tomorrow I will post a memorial of pictures of our big, sweet boy, whose greatest loves in his life were always Andrew and little children.

R.I.P sweet Riley. You will live forever in our hearts and minds.

Thankful Thursday with Halloween Poetry

First, thanks to Angel Brian who is hosting Thankful Thursday as well as Angel Sammy for the fun picture every week.

Xena: Chia asked to do the poetry this week, so, since I’m a good sister, I said ok.

The Halloween Disguise by Chia

It’s the No Clue Dog Clan
To do the worst they can.
Disguised on All Saints’ Eve
Dressed up just to deceive.

“Let me at em!” Chia growls,
Or they’ll rip out that cat’s bowels.
Ri! Bark real loud and roar!
The cat will lock the door.”

“Then run fast!” whispered Luce.
The cat yelled, “Bones for truce!”
The three sat up and begged,
But later that house egged!

I was going to say I am thankful Mom didn’t embarrass me for Halloween like she did a couple of years ago:

2022 – How embarrassing!

But then this happened:

How humiliating!

She even faded the background to make me stand out more! She’s been calling me Sausage, as in “Come here, little sausage.” Grrrr. I give her a dirty look every time she does it. I mean, she’s starving me and I still put on another 1.5 pounds. Yep I went from 15 pounds to 21.5 pounds! (Riley’s food sure is tasty!!)

Xena: I’m thankful I’ve stayed nice and slender…although I’d rather get more food! And I’m thankful Mom took the day off work today so I didn’t have to dress up as a skunk…or a vampire dog!

I’ve already done that. Here’s a couple of throwbacks.

I’ve come to suck the blood out of all your steaks! Vampire Xena

Our first vampire on All Hallows Eve was our Angel Lexi. She popped into a party some of her friends back here on earth were having. She said,”“I am back for the party ’cause there are so many good food things and all my friends are gathered together in one place, but please don’t think I turned into a vampire dog when I died. I am not really a vampire! It is just a really great look for All Hallow’s Eve! Bwahahahaha – I have come to suck your blood. (barked in Transylvanian accent, of course)”

Hmmm. It seems like there is something just wrong about the title Angel Vampire, don’t you think? Happy All Hallows Eve, my sweet angel girl and to all our friends out there in Blogville.

Xena and Now Lucy’s Adventure Continues

Much later, at least 87 minutes…

Xena: Our front yard’s becoming a jungle.
Lucy: Do you see a giraffe? I think I hear monkeys.

Xena: *Woof! Woof! Woof!* Hey, you! Giraffe! Get outa our yard!

Lucy: *shudder* I hear something coming towards us in this front yard jungle. There’s lots of cats in this neighborhood. Sure hope it’s not a lion or a tiger or even a bear, oh my!

Both: LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS, OH MY!

Riley: There you both are. Follow me. I hear the mower coming, and you don’t want to be here.
Lucy: Come on Xena…let’s go!
Xena: Hey Riley, did Chia eat my supper?

Monkey: Screeeeee!

Tiger: Eww, smells like stinkin’ dog around here. Glad they’re gone!

The end.

Crossing the Border

Lucy, Ace Reporter, here with the newest news on the Border Crossings. A rabbit was sighted crossing our property border early last week. Xena, can you tell us more about what happened?

Xena: Yes, thank you, Lucy. I and my sisters were watching out the window for passersby to bark at when suddenly a bunny leaped out of the woods that define our property border on the north. The bunny hopped along our road border to the west and into our front yard.
I quickly called for a meeting of the pack, as a decision had to be made. It was difficult to come to an agreement, as everyone was yelling at the top of their voices.

Lucy: Yes, I heard – and was a part of – all the commotion. What happened next.

Xena: It was a difficult decision. Was the bunny smuggling things into our yard? Was it going to try to hurt us? Why couldn’t it just stay in the woods where it belonged? It would have been so easy to chase the bunny and try to catch it. Fresh meat, you know. In the end, we all agreed that the bunny deserved the same rights as we had. The right to live in peace and eat our grass and move about in our yard without fear.

So we opened our borders to the huddled masses yearning to breathe free.

Lucy: That was a kind and smart decision we all made, and ended well for everyone. This is Lucy, Ace Report…

Xena: Wait, Lucy. Did you forget what happened a couple of days afterward? Word got out that we have open borders, and a different kind of immigration started. We started taking turns as border watchers. Remember? I’ve got this picture of you as a “watcher.”

A couple of days later it was Riley’s turn. That’s when the next property border crossing happened.

Here’s what he saw..

Lucy: It sure does look like we’ve become a diversified property!

Chia, Riley, Xena and Lucy, with liberty and free grass for all!

Riley’s Poetry on Thankful Thursday

Hi, yep, I’m still here. I’ve lost an awful lot of weight, except I’ve got a big belly, or so I’m told. But I know My Person Andrew needs me right now, so I’m sticking around as long as I can. When Mom Amy asked me if I wanted to write a poem this week, I didn’t really feel like it, but, well, then I thought, “Hmmmm, I might not be able to do many more,” so I did. By the way, this picture of me is from four years ago. Let’s start by thanking Angel Sammy for the fun picture this week. And here it is.

Chicken legs

Look at that load of chicken legs;
That’s the stuff for which we all beg.
Why’s that dude got ’em all on his head?
Wait! Chicken legs means those birds are dead!

I need to sniff and follow the trail
From where he came; I’ll have it nailed.
And then I’ll stuff my stomach full
Before I worship at the shul.

BOL! I remember when Mom Amy used to work in the office of a Jewish shul. I get my inspiration (and rhymes) from tons of things I know. I oughta write a book like Lexi did. Yep, I bet I could, I bet….I…*snore*

Mom Amy: The pups said I could give the thankful today. First, though, many thanks to Angel Brian for hosting Thankful Thursday.

I am thankful for all of you who rallied around me with sympathies, good wishes, and even information of how they could memorialize Riley when I let you know the condition he was in last week. Thursday I made the appointment for Friday to take his last trip to the vet, and he must have known and not been ready. Or he knew H.P. Andrew still needed him. Friday morning he woke up feeling considerably better. At that point, H.P. Andrew made the decision to wait. And you were all so kind about the change of heart, too. You are truly wonderful people, and it is a privilege to be even a small part of your lives.

Riley’s Still with Us

Riley had a quiet night (maybe because I dosed him with CBD oil and Valerian EO). This morning he was walking fine and not coughing nearly as much. The cough has been caused by his enlarged heart pressing on his esophagus. So Andrew changed his mind and we are going to watch him over the weekend. I still don’t expect it to be long. I just wanted to let all my wonderful, supportive blogging friends know what was going on and that Riley. Is. Still. With. Us.
Here’s another picture of Riley, this time from one or two years ago, with his beloved Racky-D. He could relate to Racky-D, both of them having problems with their right eyes.

And just a side note, although I often cast Chia as this crazy, over the top dog (which she can be) she is also very sweet and loving and empathetic to pain and suffering. She tried to comfort me all last evening, and this morning she kept insisting to get into the bedroom with Andrew. She usually only does that to get Lucy out, but Lucy slept with me and Jeff and the “two littles” last night. She empathetically felt Andrew needed her.

Again, thank you for the outpouring of love and understanding and support. I truly don’t know what I would do without you.

Your blogging friend/family member,

Amy

Riley’s Last Night

This will be short. Riley has been suffering with labored breathing for two or three weeks. It has been progressively getting worse. His appetite, even for raw beef, has diminished to almost nothing. Today, his hips are giving out.

Riley is Andrew’s heart dog, and Andrew is Riley’s person. They are currently together in the bedroom, and Riley is lightly snacking on pizza. Tonight, tomorrow morning, he will get anything he wants. Tomorrow, if he makes it through the night, he’ll make his last trip to the vet, then to the crematory, the same crematory that took care of my Freda and Sammy and Lexi. We’ll pick out an urn and return in an hour or two to pick up his remains.

Every one of you know how hard and heart wrenching this is, for me and Jeff, but mostly for Andrew. Please keep all of us in your prayers.

Riley turned 14 May 1. I will always remember him as the sweet, goofy puppy he was 13 years ago.

Riley, 6 months old, his first week at his new home with us.

Riley on Thankful Poetic Thursday

I’m on a streak here for the poetry Thursday. Chia’s complaining, but she is alway complaining about something, so all I can say is “deal with it.” I might, and I mean might let her do the poem next week. We’ll see.

Here’s the picture Angel Sammy gave us to work with. Of course, it has had a small alteration.

The Travel Guide by Riley

Hello Monsieur Bear.
It’s nice to have you here.
I hope your trip was good
And you got some fishy food.

I’m your travel guide;
I’ll take you far and wide.
Where’er you want to go
Moving fast or moving slow.

To the spots the tourists go,
Moving fast or taking it slow.
Or to spots much more remote,
Touring farms with cows and goats.

You can’t eat them when you’re there
But I’ll get you some sans hair.
We’ll go to a movie show
Or to a club b’low.

Watch that bus! It’s coming fast!
Oh crap! He shouldn’t of smoked that grass.
If that bus had only braked!
But what a pretty rug he’ll make.

A bear rug, BOL! I bet that would be super soft to lay on. Now for my thankful. My Person Andrew has been here with me all last week and all this week. That makes my heart happy.
Hey, anyone else got a thankful today?

Chia: I’m thankful that Mom and Dad’ve been taking me and my sisters on a lot more walks. I pull so hard on the leash that my nails scrape on the road and I don’t have to get them cut. I’m really thankful for that too!

Riley: Chia, you’re weird.

Chia: Grrrrrrr *runs away*

We give many thanks to Angel Sammy for the fun picture this week and to Angel Brian for hosting Thankful Thursday!

Your friends, Riley and Chia

Thankful Poetry Thursday with Riley

I get to write another poem today, and I’m going to try really hard to be great at it.

I’m the Kid by Riley

I know this swing is just for kids
And the rules us pups forbid,
But I’m the kid in my family
Just with a different anatomy.

I steal the food and run through the house,
Slipping away quiet as a mouse.
When Mom’s on the phone I bark loud.
Of my high howl I’m very proud.

I’ve toys that fill the living room
Plus my own bed, my own costume.
Yet in bed with my folks I creep,
Praying, “Now I lay me down to sleep.”

Amen
Now here’s some thankfuls from my two little sisters.

Chia: Well, I have, besides the GPS tracker I already wear on my collar, yet another little tag to trace my every move. I couldn’t be happier – NOT! Why do these people think they have to know everywhere I go? And now I jingle louder as I run through the house, so they even know where I am when I’m at home. It must be an obsession. Here’s the stupid thing that’s now hanging on me. I’ll be happy when it falls off and gets lost.

Xena: My collar name tag broke, so Mommy ordered me a MYLUCKYTAG QR Code Pet ID Tag from the amazing Amazon. It looks like this. Now if I somehow get lost, my Mommy will be able to find me through something called a Gee Pee Ess, and find me even better if a nice person scans that square thing on the back and contacts her. They’ll know I’m lost cause the tag says so. She also got me one that slides on my collar that has my name and Mommy and Daddy’s phone numbers on it. I’m so thankful they love me and want me to be with them. That makes me happy.

The Mom: I’m so very thankful that such great technology exists to help get our beloved cats and dogs back to us if they should get lost. I’m also thankful that it has a free subscription so that I can see where in the world they are and so that anyone who finds them can contact me. Go technology! Here’s a link if you want to check them out. (Nope, not getting anything for this other than the satisfaction of knowing it could be of use to someone.)

And here’s many thanks to Angel Sammy for the fun picture this week and to Angel Brian for hosting Thankful Thursday!

Run Away! by Riley

Many thanks to Angel Sammy for the fun picture this week and to Angel Brian for hosting Thankful Thursday!

Here’s Angel Sammy’s fun picture and my poem for it.

Run away! Run away! by Riley

Run away kids, run as fast as you can.
No, your parents aren’t blind, they just don’t understand
They think it’s just soil from the water’s bottom,
But it’s really a monster, too late when you spot ‘im.
Run!

Well, at least I got one little kid moving! I’m thankful that I can still move around, too. I’m coughing more, but I’ve learned to lift my head up or lay it on a pillow and that helps. My Person Andrew’s been with me all week, but he’s leaving to stay with Jentry tomorrow cause it’s some big anniversary for them. I’m sure he’ll be back on Sunday, but I’ll miss him. *cough, gag, cough*

Your buddy, Riley

Riley and Egg Girl on Poetry and Thankful Thursday

Many thanks to Angel Sammy for the fun picture this week and to Angel Brian for hosting Thankful Thursday!

Here’s Angel Sammy’s fun picture and my poem for it.

EGGSHELL SALLY by Riley

Eggshell Sally sat on a wall
Eggshell Sally took a great fall
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t make omelet of Sally’s eggshell so thin.

As I was waiting to see what would happen
Poor Eggshell Sally (who was now Miss McCracken)
Cried out “Dear Doggie, won’t you please help me?”
So I ate up the eggshell and set Sally free!

Sally was so happy she took me to eat
All the steak and sushi and hamburger meat
My poor stomach could hold; think I’m getting too old,
Cause I woke with a start from my really loud fart!

Chia: BOL, BOL, that sounds like something I would write, Riley. Guess you do have a sense of humor after all! I’m really thankful for that, cause I think it might mean the sneers you give me are just in fun..and that you weren’t really going to bite off my head when you almost caught it when I was sticking my head into your almost- empty dog food bowl. Dad could hear your jaws snap together from the other room. Good thing I have fast reflexes!
Riley: Think again, hot dog.

Xena: I have a thankful, if you two are done. Even if you two aren’t done. I’m thankful that I haven’t had an allergy outbreak in over a year, since Mommy started giving me that Four Leaf Rover powder stuff to get rid of yeast and make my gut healthy. And Riley, believe it or not, I’m also thankful that all your itching and ear inflammation has gone away since she started giving it to you, too. (He scratched really loud and drove me crazy…at least I used to lick myself quietly.) I’m looking forward to another spring without the itchies!

Happy Thankful Thursday, everyone! Riley, Chia and Xena

Happy Tuesday with Riley

Hi folks *wags* it’s me, Riley. Mom Amy said I should give you happy news that I’ve been doing better lately. You might already know that I’ve got an enlarged heart that presses on something called an ass off me gus* and I’ve also heard it called my wind pipe. Weird, huh? My Person Andrew has discovered two things. Thing 1: If I lay my head on the bolster, it keeps my airways open and I’m not waking up during the night coughing cause I’m struggling to breath. Thing 2: I breathe better when I don’t get too hot, and opening the bedroom window and turning on the fan helps a lot.

Mom Amy said, “Let’s show the folks you using your bolster.” So, here I am.

Sometimes the bolster rolls away from me, and when Mom Amy or MP Andrew picks it up, I lift my head for them to place it on my legs. I’ve also learned that if I sleep more on my side, that keeps the pressure off my windpipe and I’m getting more sleep and so is MP Andrew! Happy Tuesday, everyone!

Thanks to Miss Sandee at Comedy Plus for hosting Happy Tuesday Blog Hop!
